Mummies

That was fun. I liked the movie and both the game.
What should I know from the movie? I took notes and I want the information I really need.

Happy Holidays!

Mummies

You are not falling behind the class. Your quizzes are up to date, and we will not be taking the section 3 quiz. :)

Today we mummified apple slices in class by placing them in Epsom salt. First we watched this movie, explaining mummification.

You can also play the game that we played on the Discovery kids website.

TIP Vocab

Whoopsie i forgot to post the Vocab along with the previous post:

Pharaoh- This is the name for the king of Egypt. I drew a guy with a cone-like hat with a long rectangular beard.
Dynasty- a family of rulers. I drew a timeline with rulers with the same last name in the same dynasty.
Regent- Someone who rules for a child who is to become the pharaoh until the child is old enough to rule. I drew a stick figure and wrote Hatshepsut next to it.
Hatshepsut- a female ruler (who was a regent for Thutmose III.) known for her boldness against invaders and bringing economic (she encouraged trading) in the New Kingdom. When Thutmose III was of age, Hatshepsut refused to give the kingdom to him, until she died. I drew a female dressed like a pharaoh with a fake beard.
Thutmose III- a child pharaoh who later after his regent died, was a great pharaoh who conquered many places.
Afterlife- life after you die. I drew a bunch of ghosts celebrating and eating like people living do.
Pyramids- huge buildings with four sloping outside walls forming a triangle.
Mummy- a well preserved body. They would take all organs out, replace it with salt, bathe it in spices, then wrap it up with bandages. I drew a stick figure with stripes on it, which represents the bandages.

Questions and TIP vocab

Dear Mrs. Turbeville,

Should I do anything for the salt maps?
Should I do the quizzes?

I'm just worried that I'm falling behind compared to the class.

Vocab

Good thoughts!

Women were treated very well in ancient Egypt, but Hatshepsut probably felt that she would have more respect from the Egyptians if she dressed as a traditional pharaoh. Her people knew that she was a woman, but she still chose to dress traditionally.

Below is the vocab that we will be starting tomorrow for section 3.

Discussion Answer

I think Hatshepsut dressed as a male pharaoh even though they knew the pharaoh of Egypt was a pharaoh because back then, usually men had more power than females (in my opinion)/ had a higher class (ex. in Mesopotamia women were in the same class as slaves), so to have a little more power or to look like one might have a little more power.

HT as a man?

Today's discussion:
Why do you think that Hatshepsut decided to dress in male clothing? People knew that she was a woman, yet she chose to portray herself as a male pharaoh.

Today's HW is to define the following vocab:
Pharaoh
Dynasty
Regent
Hatshepsut
Thutmose III

My opinion

(It takes too long for me to type Thutmose III's stepmother so I will call her HT)

I personally wouldn't easily give up all of that power, so it was probably hard for HT do hand over all of that power to Thutmose III.
I think she should have given the throne over to Thutmose because she's not giving other people an opportunity to do things for their kingdom and have their say and opinion. Also, she's bending the rules and I think you should always follow rules (a regent has to give the throne over to the child when they are old enough), especially if you are a pharaoh; but then again she has complete power and probably can do what she wants.

Hatshepsut

Great Job!!! Your answers for that assignment were excellent.

What did you think about Hatshepsut not wanting to give up the throne to Thutmose III (her stepson)? Should she have given him the throne when he was old enough?
